Understand Umrah and its spiritual purpose

Umrah and Hajj are different

Umrah is worship centred on the Sacred House in Makkah. Its familiar sequence is entering ihram for Umrah, tawaf, sa’i and the shaving or trimming that completes the rite. It is distinct from Hajj, with its appointed season and additional rites. Umrah does not replace an obligatory Hajj, and its visa does not permit Hajj.

The legal classification of Umrah itself differs between schools; it should not casually be called one of the five pillars. Learn the guidance you follow and ask a qualified teacher about circumstances such as travel for another person, a missed miqat or a medical limitation.

Begin with intention and understanding

Reflect on why you are going, responsibilities you must settle and what you hope to improve after returning. Study the route through the rites before arriving in a crowded mosque. A simple understood sequence is more helpful than memorising many phrases without knowing where they belong.

The journey can be moving, tiring, joyful and unfamiliar at the same time. Do not measure its value by the room view, the number of photographs or whether you experience the same emotions as another pilgrim. Patience, respect and care for companions remain part of your conduct throughout.

Dates and access need separate checks

Umrah is not confined to a single annual ritual date, but Saudi entry and access arrangements can be restricted around Hajj. The lunar calendar moves against the Gregorian one. Do not copy a permanent “late June to mid-July closure” or assume a visa’s expiry date is the only condition on access.

This September 2026 edition does not advertise the past Ramadan or Hajj season as upcoming. If you are planning a future journey, verify its own calendar, permits and operational instructions before making non-refundable commitments.

Check eligibility, documents and individual needs

Passport, nationality and residence

Establish the passport you will use for the whole journey and whether you qualify for the proposed entry route. Living in the UK, EU, Canada or US does not automatically make you a citizen or give you the same visa options as a passport holder from that country.

For the tourist eVisa route, Visit Saudi specifies at least six months of passport validity from entry, not six months after return. Other routes and transit countries need their own checks. If the passport is renewed after visa issuance, obtain the appropriate official advice rather than assuming the old visa automatically transfers.

Travellers returning to a country where they are not citizens should check the documents or electronic status needed to return. Keep readable copies, but carry the required originals. An online application can legitimately request scans; the blanket claim that photocopies or digital images are never accepted is wrong.

Children and companions

There is no universal rule that a person must be eighteen to perform Umrah. The booking or visa application may require an adult responsible for a minor, and permit or access conditions must be checked separately. Confirm the child’s passport, visa route, consent or custody evidence where applicable, room arrangement and suitable transport.

For older relatives or disabled travellers, describe the actual assistance needed. A wheelchair symbol on a hotel listing is not a complete access assessment. Discuss airport assistance, transport, hotel access and the route inside the mosque together.

Health requirements are not optional background reading

The official 2026 Umrah document requires an appropriate meningococcal vaccine. The older claim that it is no longer required must not guide your preparation. Check the current Saudi document and arrange individual travel-health advice early enough to complete necessary steps.

Choose the right visa and Nusuk process

Compare the available routes

The Visit Saudi passport-based tourist eVisa list includes the UK, Canada, the US and many European countries. It does not mean every European resident qualifies, and the Tunisian passport is not on the list checked for this edition. Separate status-based routes may exist; confirm the exact conditions through the relevant official channel.

The tourist eVisa permits Umrah, not Hajj, subject to current access arrangements. Dedicated Umrah products have their own application, service-package and seasonal conditions. Visa on arrival is an option only where the traveller and documents qualify; boarding and final admission remain separate checks.

A stopover product through an eligible airline booking is a distinct route, not a free visa automatically attached to every connection. A short nominal allowance does not guarantee enough time for immigration, travel to Makkah, the rites and the return flight. Start with our visa comparison.

Apply without inventing information

Use the official portal for the route chosen. Read the form’s current instructions for photos, documents and file size. Do not assume every route needs two photographs or the same upload dimensions. Enter names, dates and document numbers exactly as required, checking automatic extraction against the passport.

If a required field does not fit, ask support. Do not enter a fictitious flight number, guess a missing date of birth or translate a legal name into Arabic merely because an old guide suggests it. For long names or incomplete dates, see our passport-field guide.

Review the total charge and terms before paying. A service fee does not guarantee approval, and no fixed euro price or expedited turnaround is promised here. Avoid duplicate applications while an existing one is unresolved. Retain the application reference and track it through the official service.

Check the issued document

Confirm your name, passport, visa type, validity, number of entries and permitted stay. A one-year visa does not grant a year in the country, and a multiple-entry visa does not necessarily reset the stay allowance on each entry. Use the actual document and validity guide rather than an agent’s abbreviated label.

Distinguish the Nusuk services

Nusuk Umrah provides eligible users with packages through authorised providers, including direct booking. Nusuk Hajj is the separate Hajj programme for serviced countries. The relevant Nusuk permit and Rawdah services are not interchangeable with either a visa or a package receipt.

Set up the access you need using contact details you control, and check current permit availability and instructions. A reservation for visiting the Rawdah in Madinah does not book an Umrah slot in Makkah. Do not buy a promise of guaranteed access from an unofficial intermediary. Women’s travel: separate administration, religious guidance and safety

Avoid outdated age thresholds

Saudi Ministry announcements reported by SPA had already removed the administrative mahram requirement for women performing Umrah before 2026. Do not present it as a new 2026 change, or reproduce an old universal division between women below and above forty-five.

Check current visa, booking and travel conditions for the individual, especially for minors. Administrative permission is not a claim of unanimous religious agreement about travelling without a mahram. Discuss that question with a qualified scholar whose guidance you follow rather than treating a visa approval as a fatwa.

Plan the practical journey

Whether travelling with relatives, a women’s group or independently, confirm the actual room arrangements, transfer contacts and availability of help. A “safe group” label in an advertisement does not explain who accompanies you on each journey or what happens if someone becomes separated.

Keep control of your passport, money and account access. Agree check-in messages and a meeting point, and use verified transport. Travellers who do not speak Arabic can keep the hotel’s Arabic address and a short explanation of assistance needs offline.

Prepare for the rites

Women’s ihram does not require the two wraps worn by men. Prepare modest clothing suited to the journey and learn the specific restrictions, including the transmitted guidance about niqab and gloves. Medical needs and other detailed cases should be discussed individually.

Compare packages and build a realistic budget

Define the trip before comparing its price

Specify departure airport, travel dates, number of hotel nights, room occupancy and essential assistance. The price of a Paris departure from an old advert is not a reliable budget for someone travelling from London, Toronto, New York or another European city.

Ask for a written total and a clear currency. Separate SAR expenses from GBP, EUR, CAD or USD spending and include actual conversion and payment charges. No fixed 2026 package range or guaranteed discount is used in this guide.

Confirm the inclusions

Check international flights, baggage, visa-related services, each hotel, meals, airport transfers, travel between cities and religious guidance. “All inclusive” needs a detailed contract. Ask whether an English-speaking guide is available throughout the stay or only at particular sessions.

Identify provisional services and what substitutions are allowed. A reservation reference is not always an issued flight ticket, and a hotel pictured in advertising is not always the one named in your contract. Save the confirmed details before departure.

Verify the seller and protection

Check the overseas seller and Saudi service provider separately. Relevant registration, package protection and insurance vary by country and booking type. ATOL, EU package rights and Canadian provincial registration should not be presented as identical schemes. A recommendation from a mosque or friend is useful context, not a substitute for verification.

If arranging the trip yourself, account for the coordination work and separate cancellation terms. If choosing an agency, confirm who will respond when a flight, room or transfer changes. Use the anti-scam guide before paying.

Keep a contingency

Budget for meals not included, local transport, communications, medical preparation and unexpected disruption. Protect a reserve rather than using every available amount for a room upgrade. Follow the main stages of Umrah

The following is a practical overview, not a ruling on every exceptional case. Learn the details with qualified guidance before travel, and ask for help if a medical, timing or ritual problem arises.

1. Enter ihram before crossing the relevant miqat

Identify the miqat for the route you will actually take. Putting on the garments and entering the ritual state are not the same act. Prepare in time and commence Umrah with the appropriate intention before passing the boundary when travelling through it for that purpose.

For a flight approaching Jeddah for Umrah, do not plan to wait until landing to deal with the miqat. Prepare your garments and learn the timing beforehand; an announcement can help but is not a substitute for preparation. If visiting Madinah first and later travelling to Makkah, Dhul-Hulayfah is the relevant miqat for that departure. The boundary is not simply the edge of the city or the mosque courtyard.

Prepare cleanliness and clothing in a practical way. Men normally use an izar and rida; women use appropriate ordinary modest clothing. Not every stitched object is prohibited. Learn the restrictions on clothing, perfume, grooming and other conduct, and distinguish them from the rest of the holiday wardrobe.

Begin the rite with the intention for Umrah and the transmitted talbiyah. If you anticipate a possible impediment, ask about any appropriate conditional intention in advance. 2. Complete tawaf

Enter through a currently authorised mosque entrance; a particular named gate is not a condition of Umrah. Follow the staff and signs for your route. Prepare wudu and understand the detailed guidance you follow about purity.

Start at the alignment of the Black Stone and complete seven circuits with the Kaaba on your left, keeping outside the Hijr enclosure. Each return to the starting alignment completes one circuit. You do not have to touch or kiss the Stone; do not push or obstruct others to reach it.

Men follow the recommended raml in the first three circuits of the relevant tawaf when it can be done safely. Idtiba, uncovering the right shoulder by arranging the upper wrap, applies during that tawaf—not only the first three circuits and not the entire stay. Cover appropriately again for prayer afterwards. These recommendations should not lead to harming someone or declaring a rite invalid because a person could not do them.

Make remembrance and personal supplications without a compulsory script for each circuit. Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone, the supplication beginning Rabbana atina asks for good in this world and the next. If uncertain about counting or interrupted, ask how to proceed under the relevant guidance rather than inventing a universal restart rule.

3. Complete sa’i between Safa and Marwah

Begin at Safa. One length to Marwah counts as one; the return to Safa counts as two. Seven lengths finish at Marwah, not fourteen lengths or seven return trips.

Jabir’s account describes the opening at Safa and remembrance and supplication on the two hills. Learn a concise referenced version before travel and make personal duas along the way. The designated quicker section is for men able to follow it without harm; women keep their usual walking pace.

Use the permitted assistance route if needed, maintain awareness of others and do not stop in a bottleneck to read or film. There is no special mandatory pair of prayers simply because sa’i has ended. Our supplication guide explains the remembrances and counting.

4. Complete shaving or trimming and leave ihram

For men, shaving or the required trimming completes this stage; women trim rather than shave. Learn the extent required under the guidance you follow instead of assuming clipping a token strand is always enough.

Use a suitable hygienic arrangement, preserve privacy and check any luggage restrictions on scissors or blades. Do not treat taking off the wraps or returning to the hotel as the act that releases you from ihram.

If a rite was omitted, interrupted or performed incorrectly, seek qualified advice promptly with a clear account of what happened. Compensation is not the same for every case. A standalone Umrah does not require collecting pebbles for the Jamarat; that belongs to Hajj contexts, not a general Umrah packing list.

Plan travel, accommodation and a manageable daily routine

Choose dates for your real circumstances

Consider climate, crowd, school holidays, work leave and access conditions together. Cooler months can still be busy, and December is not automatically quiet. Ramadan has particular spiritual significance but may involve greater demands on sleep, meals and movement. Do not select dates only because an old article calls them the “ideal season”.

Check official security advice before committing. At the September 2026 review, Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel and the US advises reconsidering travel; UK guidance includes regional restrictions and possible disruption. Follow your own government’s current advice and verify the implications for insurance and the route you plan.

Makkah first or Madinah first

A Madinah visit is not one of Umrah’s required stages, and there is no mandatory order between the two cities. Madinah first may allow recovery before the rites; a direct journey to Makkah may suit another itinerary. Either way, plan the relevant miqat and do not confuse an overnight stop in Jeddah with arriving without an existing intention for Umrah.

Compare the actual flights and transfers, not only the cities listed on the package. A Saudi domestic flight after an international arrival requires time for entry formalities at the first Saudi airport. For separate tickets, check baggage collection, transit permission and missed-connection consequences.

Between the cities

The Haramain railway, coaches and appropriate road transport offer different trade-offs. Check live booking details, stations, baggage limits and the transfer at each end. A train time is not the full door-to-door journey; a coach estimate can change with traffic and stops.

Hotel and daily access

Choose based on the actual room-to-prayer-area journey, including lifts, slopes, entrance restrictions and shuttle waiting. Confirm meal times, room occupancy and essential accessibility features in writing. An area name or a hotel star rating cannot answer all these questions.

Plan rest and realistic return journeys rather than filling every hour. Agree how companions will reunite if separated and who has the address and transport contact. Keep documents and necessary supplies available even if one phone fails.

Pack for the itinerary

Keep critical documents and permitted medicines accessible, and prepare appropriate clothing, tested footwear, a compatible charger and a compliant cabin power bank. Check each airline and ground-transport allowance. Do not assume a universal suitcase weight, compulsory accessory or free Zamzam allowance. The packing checklist covers the details.

Protect health and allow for fatigue

Prepare before departure

Review the official Umrah health document with a travel-health professional. The 2026 meningococcal timing and validity requirements matter even if your visa application did not ask you to upload the record. Country-specific and individual rules can add requirements; a European or North American home address does not resolve your entire travel history.

Discuss chronic conditions, medicine supply, mobility and any equipment needed. Follow the relevant SFDA process for controlled medicines. Do not prescribe your own preventive medicines or change ongoing treatment based on a general pilgrimage checklist.

Make the itinerary fit the traveller

Build up appropriate activity gradually if advised, and plan rest around long flights, time-zone changes and the rites. A relative who manages a short walk at home may find a hot, crowded route much harder. Avoid assuming every person can follow a fixed daily distance.

Use suitable sun protection and take sensible opportunities for rest, food and fluids according to individual advice. If fasting, discuss travel or illness-related religious and medical questions before a problem occurs. Do not treat endurance as a test that requires ignoring symptoms.

Hygiene and help

Follow hand hygiene and current public-health advice, and use food and water arrangements appropriate to your needs. Seek medical attention promptly if seriously unwell. Keep your insurer’s assistance details, a concise medical summary and official emergency contacts accessible to a trusted companion.

Study the rites, ask questions and learn useful remembrances with their meanings. Prepare personal supplications in a language you understand. Religious learning should clarify the journey rather than leave you afraid that every imperfect pronunciation destroys it.

Keep your intention sincere and settle practical responsibilities before leaving. Discuss expectations with companions: pace, assistance, time together and privacy. A group travels more calmly when it has agreed how to handle ordinary differences before encountering a crowded station or mosque.

Expect an urban journey as well as worship

Queues, disrupted sleep, administrative checks and changed plans can occur. Be considerate to staff and fellow pilgrims, avoid arguments and do not turn a preferred location into a reason to push. Respect current photography and access rules, and avoid sharing strangers’ images without consent.

Maintain a simple daily plan with rest and flexibility. Keep important documents secure and ask the responsible service when something is unclear. Neither an app nor an agency removes your need to understand the basic arrangements.

Take the lessons home

After returning, keep a manageable practice, repair relationships and share accurate information without presenting your own itinerary as universal. The number of souvenirs or repeated rites does not measure what you have learned.

Before departure, make one final review: correct passport and permission, current health preparation, confirmed travel and accommodation, relevant permits, realistic assistance and a contingency plan.
