Travelling independently does not mean being isolated. Build several backups: offline documents, appropriate insurance, reachable contacts, verified transport and enough time between connections.

Check the conditions for your dates

Check your passport, visa route, health requirements and the Umrah permit applicable to your visit in Nusuk. Eligibility depends on nationality and individual circumstances, not simply on departing from Europe, the UK, Canada or the US. The Saudi tourist eVisa can cover Umrah, but not Hajj; seasonal restrictions still apply.

Security check dated 2 September 2026: Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel to Saudi Arabia; the US advisory is Level 3, “Reconsider travel”. UK advice contains regional restrictions and warns of possible disruption. European countries issue their own advice. Build an itinerary that can absorb delays

Avoid short connections on separate tickets, unconfirmed transfers after midnight and unnecessary hotel changes. Allow for immigration, baggage and any terminal transfer before selecting a train; a scheduled landing time is not the time you reach the station.

Keep reservations available offline and share flights, hotels, insurance, visa details and agreed check-in times securely with a trusted person. For a long-haul trip from North America, check the Saudi arrival date and allow for fatigue rather than scheduling every hour immediately after landing.

Choose a hotel suited to a solo stay

Check reception hours, the actual entrance, the lighting and simplicity of the return route, lifts and luggage storage. Get a late arrival confirmed in writing. Save the address in Arabic and English, together with a photograph of the frontage.

Use official transport and prepare a fallback

At Jeddah, use the airport’s listed services and signed pickup areas. If taking Haramain, use its official booking channel and plan the onward journey from Makkah station at Rusayfah. For a coach, confirm the current service and the exact stop on your ticket.

Protect money, documents and phone access

Keep two payment methods separately, a modest cash reserve and your bank’s contact details. Carry your passport securely when required, with protected digital and separate paper copies. Do not keep every backup in the same bag.

Install the apps you need before departure, enable backups and carry an airline-compliant power bank. Retain access to the home number or email address used for verification. Take personal safety seriously

Follow local instructions, avoid demonstrations and sensitive security or military locations, and keep departure plans under review. Check how current government advice affects your insurance. Save the consular contacts relevant to your nationality, not merely your country of residence.

Use FCDO email alerts for UK advice, Canada’s registration service or US STEP where applicable; European travellers should check their own foreign ministry’s alert service. France’s Fil d’Ariane is not the universal registration scheme for everyone reading English.

Agree a check-in routine

Send a message on arrival in each city and after a significant change of plan. Agree in advance what your contact should do if you miss check-ins: try calling you, then the hotel or assistance service, and contact the appropriate authorities if the circumstances warrant it.

Use explicit dates and time zones. “Message me at eight” is ambiguous when your contact is in London, Paris, Toronto or New York. Set a reasonable response window that accounts for flights, sleep and worship, without delaying action on a genuine emergency.
