When Madinah first may suit you
A stay in Madinah can help an older traveller, family or anxious first-time pilgrim recover from the flight and review the rites calmly. This can be particularly valuable after a long journey from Canada or the US, or several connecting flights from Europe.
Before travelling to Makkah, prepare your clothing and enter the ritual state by the applicable miqat. Dhul-Hulayfah, also called Abyar Ali, is the miqat on the usual Madinah route. Do not assume a bus or train will pause while you get ready: confirm the arrangements before departure. Visiting the Prophet’s Mosque does not itself place you in ihram.
When Makkah first may suit you
This sequence may work well with a convenient Jeddah arrival and a confirmed transfer to Makkah. If you are already travelling for Umrah, be prepared to enter ihram before the aircraft crosses the applicable miqat. You then remain in ihram through immigration, baggage collection and the transfer.
You do not have to perform the rites immediately after a tiring flight. You may rest or sleep at the hotel while observing the restrictions, then complete tawaf, sa‘i and the required shaving or trimming. Only after completing Umrah do you leave ihram. Our step-by-step guide explains the sequence.
Jeddah airport does not always mean Makkah first
A direct flight to Madinah makes the sequence easy to understand. Arriving through Jeddah can still be part of a genuine Madinah-first journey. The cited IslamWeb guidance permits arrival in Jeddah without ihram when the traveller first proceeds to Madinah, then enters ihram from its miqat for Makkah.

Plan the rail journey as a separate stage
Haramain serves Makkah, Madinah, King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah Al-Sulaymaniyah and King Abdullah Economic City. Select the correct station rather than treating every Jeddah ticket as an airport departure. Check baggage allowances, boarding cutoffs and the station transfer when booking.
For Madinah–Makkah, prepare for the miqat before boarding and obtain reliable guidance on when the route reaches it. For Makkah–Madinah after Umrah, leave time to complete the hair cutting and other rites before your train. A timetable is not a religious deadline that justifies skipping a step.
Match the route to your group
Madinah first may suit travellers who need recovery time, prefer learning the rites before a second travel stage or have a straightforward arrival in Madinah. Makkah first may suit those with a simple Jeddah transfer who feel ready for the flight preparation and want to complete Umrah early.
Compare flights, hotel nights, baggage and all transfers in the same budget currency, whether GBP, EUR, CAD or USD, while retaining the original SAR prices. Do not assume either order is always cheaper. The needs of the least mobile person in the group should carry real weight.
Make the decision with five questions
Before buying, answer these together:
- How tired are we likely to be at the actual Saudi arrival time?
- Who will assist children or anyone with reduced mobility?
- Is the first airport-to-hotel transfer confirmed?
- Have we written down where and when we will enter ihram?
- Does the return flight avoid an unnecessary extra journey?
Check current government travel advice and Saudi entry and permit conditions for your dates. Choose the sequence you can carry out calmly, not the one that simply looks shortest on a map.
