Put together an outfit that works for several hours

Choose a stable headscarf without excessive sharp pins. Keep a change of clothes accessible: water, crowds and perspiration can make a change necessary. Clothing comfortable in a cool European or North American season may feel very different during extended walking in Saudi Arabia.

Shoes and socks: put your feet first

Take comfortable, broken-in shoes that are easy to remove and recognise, plus non-slip socks if they suit you. The official packing guidance includes walking shoes and non-slip socks. Test the combination before travelling rather than wearing a new pair for the first time at the mosque.

Keep shoes in a light, closed, identifiable bag with no valuables inside. A second pair is useful when it serves a different purpose: stable sandals for shorter journeys and suitable closed shoes for longer walks.

Layers, heat and chafing

A breathable underdress or loose trousers can reduce transparency and rubbing. Check seams, elastic and garment length. If you use an anti-chafing product, ensure it suits your skin and your ihram requirements, including fragrance restrictions.

Drink regularly, use a sun umbrella where permitted and take breaks. Clothing does not become more modest by causing overheating or exhaustion: look for coverage, looseness and breathability together. Follow any individual fluid or treatment advice from your clinician.

The small bag you will actually use

Carry your permit, phone, charging supplies, tissues, a mask, a small water bottle where allowed, personal medication, a shoe bag and spare sanitary protection. Use a closed pouch kept close to your body and small enough not to obstruct others.

Avoid long straps that catch on things and open bags. Keep your hotel name and a companion’s phone number on a separate card, so you can still get help if your phone is unavailable.

Hygiene and fragrance-free products

Check soap, moisturiser, deodorant, wipes and anti-chafing products before travel. A “natural” label does not mean fragrance-free. Select products suitable for your period in ihram, and ask a qualified adviser if you are unsure about a particular product or necessary treatment.

Pack ihram-period toiletries separately to avoid reaching for the wrong product when tired. Keep medicines in their original packaging and carry a prescription when needed. Do not stop prescribed treatment merely because a product raises a question about ihram.

Clothing in Madinah and organised access

The same principles of modesty and comfort apply in Madinah, but visiting Madinah does not itself require entering ihram. Entrances and areas may be organised separately for men and women. Check the entrance you will actually use when selecting a hotel, rather than measuring only to the nearest mosque wall.

A simple route to the relevant entrance can reduce unnecessary walking. Follow current signage and staff directions, as access arrangements may change.

A short checklist before closing your suitcase
