Identify your actual itinerary

These are different facts, not labels to choose for convenience. A hotel booking helps describe the route, but does not determine what you had actually intended before travelling.

Jeddah is not a general miqat for overseas pilgrims

The miqat obligation follows your approach to Makkah. On the usual international routes to Jeddah for an already planned Umrah, the relevant boundary is reached before landing. Waiting until baggage collection, the railway station or the hotel means waiting beyond that point.

A short connection does not remove the need to prepare

Remaining airside or changing terminals does not by itself change an existing Makkah-bound Umrah plan. Separate the immigration question—whether you may transit or enter—from the religious question of when the route crosses the miqat. Both need checking.

Keep clothing, suitable toiletries and essential medication in your cabin kit. Ask about the miqat early on the relevant flight, especially when an international journey connects through another hub. A short final sector may leave very little time after take-off to get ready.

You may rest overnight while remaining in ihram

If you entered ihram before arrival, you can sleep at your Jeddah hotel before continuing to Makkah. Continue observing the restrictions: the hotel stay does not end them. You may change the ihram cloths and wash with suitable unscented products without automatically leaving the ritual state.

Think through the extra time involved, including toiletries, comfortable clothing arrangements and any medical needs. Do not delay needed medical care; seek appropriate religious guidance about necessary adaptations. If the extra hotel night is only logistical, compare it with travelling to Makkah and resting there before the rites.

A genuine Madinah-first journey is different

IslamWeb’s cited ruling explicitly discusses a traveller arriving in Jeddah, proceeding first to Madinah and then coming to Makkah after entering ihram at Dhul-Hulayfah. It should not be shortened to “everyone may wait until Jeddah”.

The actual city sequence matters. For a changed itinerary, a brief connection presented as a visit, or a flight from Madinah back to Jeddah, ask a qualified scholar how the guidance applies. If flying onward from Madinah for Umrah, be ready before boarding because the miqat may be reached soon after departure. Compare the options in Madinah or Makkah first.

What if the decision to perform Umrah is genuinely new?

The cited Ibn Baz ruling distinguishes someone who came to Jeddah without an Umrah intention and only decided there to perform it. That is not the same as a pilgrim who planned Umrah before the flight but delayed formally commencing the rite.

If your earlier plans were tentative or changed during travel, describe them honestly rather than trying to fit a convenient category. A general article cannot establish your intention for you. Ask about your personal circumstances before relying on the local rule.
