The five miqats and the approaches they serve

The hadith references list the designated miqats. These broad directions are orientation, not a flight-navigation tool. A route passing a particular boundary matters more than the departure country printed on your ticket.

Leaving Madinah for Makkah

Prepare at your hotel before the Makkah journey. Dhul-Hulayfah, commonly called Abyar Ali, is the relevant miqat on the usual route. The requirement concerns the boundary, not merely entering a particular mosque building.

If travelling by bus, confirm whether a stop is actually included. On a train or flight, have the necessary clothing ready before departure and obtain reliable guidance on the crossing. Do not assume you will have time to change once a vehicle has left Madinah.

Al-Juhfah and Rabigh: avoid nationality shortcuts

Al-Juhfah is one of the designated miqats; Rabigh appears in many practical descriptions of this approach. That does not mean every flight from London, Paris, Toronto or New York uses an identical route or crosses at an identical time.

A connection, rerouting or a different final approach can change the relevant alignment. Ask about your actual flight and prepare early. Another traveller’s screenshot from a different date is not a dependable way to decide when your own aircraft reaches the boundary.

Qarn al-Manazil and the Taif approaches

As-Sayl al-Kabir is associated with Qarn al-Manazil. The Ministry’s practical guide also identifies Wadi Muharram on the Al-Hada approach. Which route is relevant depends on the road or flight you actually take towards Makkah.

Do not select whichever mosque looks nearest on a map without considering the direction of travel. A stay in Riyadh, a Gulf connection or travel through Taif requires planning the onward Makkah segment, not simply repeating advice intended for a direct flight from Europe.

Yalamlam and Dhat Irq

Yalamlam serves the southern approach, while Dhat Irq is associated with Iraq and the north-east. They remain relevant even if they appear less often in English-language package descriptions. A regional visit before Umrah can place an international traveller on a different approach.

Confirm the road with your driver or organiser and the religious application with a qualified teacher where needed. Do not cross one relevant miqat intending to choose another later simply because its facilities are more convenient.

An aircraft crosses the boundary without landing

For a flight heading to Makkah through Jeddah with an existing Umrah plan, prepare the clothing early and enter the ritual state before the relevant miqat alignment. Ask the crew how the crossing will be communicated. There is no universal “minutes before landing” rule.

You can enter before the boundary if you cannot identify the exact moment reliably; the consequence is spending longer in ihram, not permission to postpone entry beyond it. Jeddah, places inside the miqats and Makkah itself

Jeddah is not a general starting point for international travellers who have already crossed a relevant miqat on the way to their planned Umrah. The local rule for residents or a genuinely new decision after arrival must not be used to excuse that earlier crossing.

A person already inside the miqat boundaries has a different starting situation. Someone inside the Haram sanctuary who intends a new Umrah normally goes outside the Haram boundary to Al-Hill, for example Tan’im; the cited account of Aishah and the Ministry’s guidance explain this. The Haram boundary and the outer miqats are not the same thing. Ask about individual cases rather than combining the two rules.

Five checks before departure

Write down your first Saudi city, when the Umrah plan became firm, the actual segment towards Makkah, how you will identify the miqat and when your clothing will be ready. Agree a reminder with your companions without relying entirely on one person.
