Ask ten questions before paying

Send the hotel or seller a numbered request:

1. What are the first and last departures in each direction?
2. What is the frequency throughout the day?
3. How many vehicles and passenger seats are available?
4. Where exactly do guests board at the hotel?
5. What is the precise drop-off point near the mosque?
6. Where and when does the return service collect passengers?
7. What changes on Fridays, during Ramadan and late at night?
8. Can the service accommodate a wheelchair, walking frame or pushchair?
9. What is the plan when access roads close?
10. Is every journey included in the room price, or are there extra charges?

Request a map pin and a recent photograph of the vehicle. If the answer is “subject to availability”, clarify queuing, reservations and any priority for package groups. Keep the response with the booking confirmation.

Measure the walk after the bus journey

“To the Haram” can mean a peripheral stop or car park, not the entrance you can actually use. Map the pedestrian route from the drop-off to an appropriate gate, including slopes, crossings and any transfer to another shuttle.

The return collection point may differ from the drop-off. After Isha, everyone can be tired and several similar buses may arrive together. Check what the timetable means in practice

“Every 30 minutes” might describe fixed departures, a continuous loop or only a target frequency when traffic is light. Ask a concrete question: “Which departure should we use for Fajr tomorrow, and when does the first return leave?”

Capacity matters as much as frequency. As an illustration, one 20-seat vehicle serving a large hotel may require several rotations at prayer times. Ask what happens when it is full and whether additional vehicles operate. Road restrictions can also move the pickup point; a printed timetable is not a guarantee that the route stays unchanged.

Verify accessibility, not just luggage space

If someone must remain in a wheelchair, ask about a suitable ramp or lift, a secure wheelchair space and trained assistance. A luggage compartment that holds a folded chair is not the same as an accessible passenger vehicle.

Test the full journey on your first day

Try the shuttle at a less busy time, before relying on it for an important appointment. Measure the sequence from your room: lift, waiting, boarding, road journey, final walk and the complete return. Repeat the timing check for the prayer period you intend to use.

Photograph the return location and keep the coordinator’s number offline. Compare the full time and effort with walking or a verified taxi option. A free service is not automatically the most practical choice if queues and detours make the trip exhausting. Avoid making your first attempt shortly before prayer.

Prepare a realistic alternative

Keep the hotel’s Arabic address, reception number, a map and enough money for an alternative. Check current public-bus stops and operating hours, or an official taxi or ride-hailing pickup point. A city-bus ticket and a private hotel shuttle are different services.

Do not assume Makkah and Madinah have the same routes or night service. Use our bus planning guide and current operator information. For a train departure or a Nusuk appointment, allow a margin and avoid depending on the last advertised shuttle.

Recognise the warning signs

Be cautious if nobody will confirm the pickup point, departures are described only as “when the bus comes back”, Friday suspensions are undisclosed, wheelchairs are refused despite an accessibility claim, or a second paid transfer appears only after booking.

A last return before the prayer you intend to attend can make the service unsuitable. One serious problem may be enough to rule it out: there is no need to accumulate an arbitrary number of warnings. Compare hotels by the reliable room-to-mosque journey, not by a shuttle icon on a listing.
