The first ten minutes

Do not rush back along your entire route. Note the time, when you last used the item, its description, colour, brand and a distinctive feature. Ask a companion to remain reachable at your meeting point. If location tracking is available, save a screenshot but do not go alone to an isolated place.

For a bag, list its contents before speaking to the service: this helps you prove ownership without revealing every identifying detail in advance.

The Ministry’s official service information describes a lost-property office run by Haram security. Security offices also receive reports, including offices near gates 2, 7 and 33 and certain courtyard gates; confirm their current location using signs or staff.

At your hotel, ask for a written report recording your room and the areas visited. For a ride-hailing journey, start with the trip in the official app: it links the report to the driver, vehicle and time. For a street taxi, retain the registration number, receipt and pick-up location if available.

At a railway station, on a train or at an airport, contact the operator’s official service. For checked baggage, report the issue to the airline or its baggage handler before leaving the relevant area, since mishandled baggage follows a separate process.

Phone, bank card or wallet: secure it before searching

Lock and locate your phone remotely, display a callback number without revealing your address, and suspend the SIM if necessary. Freeze missing cards in your banking app and call the issuer if you see an unfamiliar transaction. Change important passwords if the device was not adequately protected.

A lost passport is an urgent travel-document problem

Report the loss to local authorities as instructed and contact the embassy or consulate responsible for your nationality. Keep passport and visa copies, tickets and a passport photograph separately: they help identify you but are not replacement travel documents. Tell your airline promptly if departure is close.

• Canadian citizens: follow Government of Canada lost-belongings guidance and contact the appropriate Canadian office abroad.
• US citizens: use US Department of State consular assistance for passport-replacement help.

Living in one of these regions does not by itself make you a citizen entitled to its passport services. Travellers with another nationality should contact their own representation. Check any transit, Saudi exit and return-entry requirements before changing your itinerary.

If you have been robbed, assaulted or would be at risk trying to recover the item, contact police or call 911, the emergency number listed in the UK’s Saudi Arabia travel advice. Do not chase anyone or attempt to recover a tracked item by yourself. Keep screenshots, receipts, the report reference and the contact details of the service handling it.
