Before departure: assemble the travel folder

The day before: identify the miqat and prepare the cabin kit

Map the actual route. Travelling through Jeddah to Makkah for Umrah normally requires ritual entry before the onboard miqat crossing; a genuine Madinah-first stay leads to preparation for the later Makkah journey. Confirm the arrangement instead of relying on the country of departure.

Pack men’s ihram cloths, suitable footwear, a spare cloth, fragrance-free toiletries, essential medication and an offline ritual guide in accessible cabin baggage. Complete routine grooming beforehand and take a shower if possible. See airport and aircraft preparation.

On the relevant journey: begin the ritual state

Put on the appropriate clothing early. Men normally use the two ihram cloths; women wear suitable modest clothing and need no special white outfit. Wearing the clothes alone is different from deliberately commencing Umrah.

Before the applicable miqat, make the intention to enter the rite and recite the talbiyah according to the guidance you follow. “Labbayka Allahumma ‘Umrah” identifies the intended rite; learn the full talbiyah from a reliable source before travel. Ask the crew early about timing and do not wait until landing in Jeddah if your miqat was crossed in flight.

While in ihram: know the restrictions and ordinary needs

Learn the rules about perfume, deliberate hair or nail removal, sexual activity and the clothing restrictions that differ for men and women. Prepare fragrance-free products so that tiredness does not lead to an automatic use of a hotel toiletry.

You can eat, drink, rest, sleep, wash appropriately and replace dirty ihram cloths without those actions themselves ending the ritual state. If something happens inadvertently or a medical need arises, obtain case-specific guidance. Do not assume every incident requires the same fidya, and do not postpone necessary medical care.

After landing: complete the transfer and rest if needed

Allow for immigration, baggage collection and any terminal transfer. Use verified transport and the correct station or coach stop. Keep your hotel’s address in Arabic and English available offline; see Jeddah airport to Makkah.

You remain in ihram during delays and while resting at the hotel. Review the group’s health, permit instructions and meeting point before setting out. There is no requirement to start immediately after an exhausting long-haul journey, but completing the rites is what ends the restrictions—not checking in.

Tawaf: seven circuits around the Kaaba

At the Grand Mosque, follow current staff instructions, designated routes and access arrangements for wheelchairs or mobility needs. Do not assume an entrance or floor mentioned in an older guide is always available. Learn the ritual requirements, including purification questions, before travel.

Tawaf consists of seven circuits with the Kaaba on your left, moving anticlockwise from the Black Stone alignment. Keep track calmly. Do not push to touch the Stone or force a path through people near Maqam Ibrahim. Supplications are not restricted to an invented compulsory text for each circuit. If you lose count or have a personal ritual difficulty, ask a qualified guide rather than guessing.

Sa‘i: count seven one-way legs

After completing tawaf and its associated acts according to the teaching you follow, proceed towards Safa. Take water or a rest where needed and keep your companions together without obstructing the route.

Count each one-way passage separately:

1. Safa to Marwah.
2. Marwah to Safa.
3. Safa to Marwah.
4. Marwah to Safa.
5. Safa to Marwah.
6. Marwah to Safa.
7. Safa to Marwah.

You finish at Marwah. Men who are able follow the prescribed quicker pace in the marked green area without endangering anyone; women do not copy that running practice. Ask staff about authorised mobility assistance and routes.

Shaving or trimming: complete Umrah before changing back

After the seventh leg of sa‘i, men shave or trim their hair as required; women trim rather than shave. Learn the appropriate method and extent from a qualified teacher instead of assuming a token snip is sufficient in every school.

Use a legitimate, hygienic barber where needed and allow time in your schedule. Do not share unsafe cutting tools or use a crowded passage as a grooming area. Once the prescribed sequence has been completed, you leave ihram and may change back into ordinary clothing.

Final check before leaving the area

Confirm that you completed the seven circuits, seven legs and required hair cutting. If you have a real doubt or an interrupted rite, ask before treating Umrah as finished. A train departure or hotel checkout is not a substitute for completing a missing step.

Must I perform Umrah immediately after landing?

No. You may rest first while remaining in ihram and observing its restrictions. Plan your permitted visit and the rites around your actual condition.

Does Safa to Marwah and back count as one leg?

No. Safa to Marwah is one leg and the return is the second. Seven legs end at Marwah.

When can I put ordinary clothes back on?

After completing the prescribed Umrah sequence, including the required shaving or trimming. Changing clothes alone does not end ihram.
