Flights: the first major cost

Ask for the airline, flight numbers, airports, stopovers, ticketing arrangement, cabin bags and checked baggage. A long connection, departure from a different city or missing baggage allowance changes the value of the offer.

Get the full payable fare and optional charges before agreeing. Within the package, also ask who assists and pays when a connection or transfer is missed. A transatlantic leg on a separate ticket should not be assumed to have the same protection as the rest of the itinerary.

Hotels: the room often explains the price difference

Compare nights, not only a marketing description such as “10 days”. Late arrival and early departure can reduce usable time while still requiring paid hotel nights.

Check the exact hotel, door-to-door route, slope, meals, taxes, occupancy and replacement terms. A four-person room with extra beds is not equivalent to two doubles. Ask about double-room supplements and what happens if the group does not fill the shared room you expected.

Transfers: name both ends of every journey

“Transfers included” may mean only the coach between Makkah and Madinah. List arrival airport–hotel, hotel–station, intercity journey, station–hotel and return airport transfer. Specify vehicle, baggage, schedule and the actual drop-off point.

A shuttle stopping far from the mosque or finishing too early can lead to extra taxi costs. Ask for its operating times, frequency, boarding arrangements and a map pin; evaluate the remaining walk, not just the word “included”.

Formalities and service

Separate visa-related official charges, insurance, administrative help, Nusuk permit assistance, religious guiding and practical on-the-ground support. Saudi eVisa charges are displayed during payment and approval is an authority decision, not an agency guarantee.

A guide’s value depends on their identity, language, presence and availability. A brief introductory session is not the same service as support throughout the stay. Ask which tasks remain your responsibility and how you retain access to your own accounts.

Charges that should be made explicit

• Extra baggage and seat selection.
• Travel to the departure airport.
• Double-room, child or solo-traveller supplements.
• Breakfast or other meals.
• Visa, insurance and service charges.
• Excluded transfers and last-mile taxis.
• SIM, laundry, storage and wheelchair services.

The answer depends on the law and contract governing the booking. For an EU-regulated package, official guidance restricts increases to specified costs and contractual conditions and rules out increases within 20 days of departure. UK CAA guidance similarly describes limited grounds and written notice at least 20 days before departure. Review the applicable rights for a significant change rather than accepting a vague unlimited-change clause.

Do not assume those same rules apply to a Canadian or US purchase. Ask the seller for the applicable provincial or state framework and written amendment and cancellation terms. Request the reason, calculation, legal basis and your options before accepting an additional charge. Consult the EU guidance or UK guidance where relevant.

The comparison formula

Calculate advertised price + necessary extras + costs caused by the itinerary. Then separately list uncovered risks, such as non-refundable bookings or a backup transfer you might need to finance. Do not invent a monetary “risk score” and treat it as a quoted cost.

Use the 20 pre-booking questions and compare the result with your independent Umrah budget. If the seller will not explain what the price includes, you cannot make a meaningful comparison.
